| The third of four patent dates appearing on HALL'S NIPPERS produced by Interchangeable Tool Company and then the Utica Drop Forge & Tool Co. after the mid-1890s.
The fourth (Jan '90) refers to patent no. 419,666.
This patent shows a different form of spring to open the jaws, and a coordinating spur and notch to keep the handles synchronized. (See also Moses C. Johnson patent no. 232,975). The internal workings of HALL'S NIPPERS was the subject of extended patent litigation which was ultimately resolved by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1889. [Thompson v. Hall, 130 U.S. 117 (1889)] |
