Description: |
The reversible ratchet mechanism comprises a double-tipped pawl and a secondary lever with an internal spring-loaded detent that selects the direction the primary pawl will swing and release. Two variations of the idea are shown and described.
November 1910 HARDWARE DEALER'S MAGAZINE has a description of three LANE'S RATCHET SCREW DRIVER AND WRENCH sets reflecting this patent and no. 979,862. These sets were offered by J.C. McCarty & Co.
One known example is marked only with this patent date; another (No. 3 set in original box marked LANE'S RATCHET SCREWDRIVER AND WRENCH with screwdriver bits and small sockets) is marked PAT. APPL'D FOR.
Compare the structure of this ratchet to the James P. Bartholomay Jan. 14, 1908 patent no. 876,680 used for the WILL B. LANE UNIQUE RATCHET sets. |
