"Vintage Machinery" entry for H. L. Beverly
Description:
H. L. Beverly had an ad in the 1857 edition of "Lovell's Canada Directory": "Beverly's Rotary Shingle Cutter. Patented 6th May 1857. This shingle cutter having taken the first prize at the Provincial Exhibition, held at Brantford in 1857, surpasses all Machines in use for cutting a Smooth, Uniform and Sound Shingle; and it is admitted by all who inspect the Shingles that they are equal to Shingles made by hand, while its speed of operation challenges competition, cutting from seven to ten thousand Shingles per hour. Its mechanical construction is remarkable for simplicity, and its durability is far beyond any thing hitherto discovered. The Inventor solicits a careful inspection of its merits, believing it will meet with universal favor. H. L. Beverly, Patentee. John Street, between Adelaide and Richmond Streets. Toronto, October, 1857."
