Description: |
Gripping teeth on the adjusting nut hold the adjustment. Steep pitch threads allow for rapid adjustment when the frictional pressure of the spring is removed. Variations are shown in use on Stillson type pipe wrenches and Billings type pocket wrenches.
The pocket wrench version was advertised as a "side screw adjust" called the BALL BEARING CYCLE WRENCH by the Ball Bearing Wrench Company in 1896.
The patent also was incorporated into wrenches produced by the New Holland Machine Company. The wrench was described in the January 15, 1895 issue of HEATING and VENTILATION.
Canadian patent no. CA-47,081 for a comparable design shown applied to a Stillson type pipe wrench was issued Sept. 20, 1894.
This patent was cited as prior art in patent no. 2,555,395. |
