Description:
The basic form is similar to Houlehan's May 29, 1883 patent (no. 278,553), but with the inner jaw movable. The wrench bearing that patent date physically resembles the wrench shown in this patent. This patent also has a Canadian equivalent -- CA-18,360 issued Dec. 24, 1883.

In this patent, the racks on opposite sides of the shank are out of step with each other. This effectively doubles the number of adjustment stops in this rack & pawl adjustable nut wrench. Known example marked, ""Houlehans's Wrench Pat. May 29th 83, Pat. Nov. 27th 83." Houlehan is listed as agent of the Toledo Wrench Company in the 1885 Toledo City Directory.

Houlehan's 1884 patent (no. 308,561) has the pawls operating in conjunction with a screw.
