Description:
Co-assignee Peck was a Civil War hero who rose to the rank of brigadier general after the war. At the time of this patent, he was an insurance salesman and remained active in various military affairs. The other inventor, Benjamin D. Stevens, may have been a partner in Edwards, Stevens & Co. of Winooski, VT, an 1870s maker of planers, sawmills and lathes. An 1882-83 business directory of Burlington lists "Stevens Benjamin D., cabinet and pattern maker, 292 North."
