Description:
The handle turns and advances or retracts a stud attached to the movable jaw. This puts the handle in line with the the center of force on the jaws. The specifications note a similar structure could be used for a pipe wrench or pipe cutter.

See also Mahlon's earlier patent 109,747.

1871 items in AMERICAN ARTISAN describe the patent, and a pipe cutter employing this adjustment principle produced by Mahlon. Late 1871 ads for J.W. Mahlon & Co. in the same journal show a pipe vise that clamps to a vertical post, and having a central clamping screw similar to the structure in this patent. An Oct. 20, 1871 article in ENGLISH MECHANIC AND WORLD OF SCIENCE includes drawings of the pipe vise, pipe wrench and pipe cutter which also appeared in the Sept. 20, 1871 issue of AMERICAN ARTISAN.
