Vintage Machinery entry for Richardson, Meriam & Co.
Description:
This patent covers expansion gearing used to drive the feed rolls regardless of the spacing between the rolls. The mechanism uses rubber springs to provide a yielding force when the lumber moves between the rolls, and also to accommodate both side-to-side and longitudinal variation in thickness. The mechanism uses bevel gears and a vertical shaft on one side of the rolls. The shaft moves with the upper roll when the roll spacing is adjusted; the bevel gear for the lower roll slides along a keyed section of shaft to accommodate that adjustment. This mechanism uses gears that are relatively small and can be made identical to one another, reducing production costs. The design is simple and effective and was widely copied after the patent had expired. The patent also covers the gearing used to adjust the position of the upper roll and that mechanism uses similar bevel gears as the feed-roll gearing.

This patent date is reported on a Richardson, Meriam & Co. planer; that planer also had patent dates for patent 64,064 and patent 70,592. The inventor was a partner in Richardson, Meriam & Co.
