This design for dividers uses a "brake" to prevent the arms from moving. The brake is in the form of a small shoe under the top post, which can have pressure applied to it by twisting the top post.
These were produced by the Eagle Pencil Company as their #560, and the production pieces are quite ornate. They feature a stamped floral design on the legs, and reversible points to allow use as dividers, pencil compass, or ink compass.
