Description: |
| This is the first patent for a removable auxiliary pipe jaw for nut wrenches. The patent drawing shows the jaw employed on a "Coes Pattern" nut wrench. Page differentiates his patent from the pipe gripping aspects of Joseph Hyde's March 13, 1855 patent no. 12,510, and George B. Phillips' May 3, 1859 patent no. 23,857. In those patents the pipe grip is not detachable.
Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" cites an 1870 SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN ad for the tool from J. W. STORRS & Co. of New York. The STORRS company was a hardware agency.
"PAGE'S AUXILIARY JAW" in five sizes is listed in an 1877 W.C. DUYCKINCK (New York) hardware supply catalog. |
