Description: |
A diagonally adjustable double open end wrench. The major differences between this wrench and William Baxter's diagonal wrench patent of Feb. 12, 1856 (pat. No. 14,221) are the location of the adjusting knurl and the interlocking tongues.
A known example has no visible maker's markings; the manufacturer is surmised to have been A.B. Davis of Philadelphia. The attribution is based on an illustration of "Davis' Improved Double End Wrench" in an 1876 S.D. Kimbark's (Chicago) Illustrated Catalog entry amid other Davis wrenches produced by the Philadelphia Tool Co. Taft and Davis were "co-inventors" of an improved abrasive paper granted patent no. 111,700. |
