Description: |
A combination quick and screw adjust wrench, with a single internal piece having both the threads for the adjusting nut, and the teeth to engage a rack on the shank for the quick-adjust action. Read describes this as an improvement on his May 13,1873 patent (no. 138,932). Examples of the READ RAILROAD WRENCH have markings reflecting these Read patents.
Read Railroad Wrench Mfg. Co. is noted in an 1886 article in THE CYCLE proposing a "bicycle" sized version. One extraordinary example is a gold-plated nominal four-inch piece with ivory handle engraved "Chauncey Depew N.Y.C. & H.R.R.R." |
