This is reportedly the first manufactured patent spring-return tape measure. The Bradley & Hubbard Mfg. Co. was established in 1852 to make clocks. During the Civil War era they diversified their product line to include "flags, hoop skirts, spring measuring tapes and match safes," to quote the Smithsonian Institution website.
