NEW SPANNER from F. M. RUSSELL & Co. - edited (FLICKR)
Description:
Abstract: "In order to make the operating- lever of a spanner or similar tool rotate about a different axis from that of the article operated upon, a handle C has links B, B<1> pivoted to it at C<2>, C<3>, the other ends of the links being pin-jointed to a jaw A. The links may be adjustable in length, and more than two may be used."

The NEWLEVA spanner from F. M. Russell & Co. appears to conform to this concept.

Corresponding U.S. patent 805,328 was granted Nov. 21, 1905; German patent DE-168633 was granted March 14, 1906 with effective date Nov. 27, 1904.

For subsequent evolution, see Tacchi's British patent GB-190520718, corresponding Febr. 16, 1909 U.S. patent no. 912,507 and corresponding German (DE-194499) and French patents.

Note: Early British patents (pre 1916) were numbered by the year and started at patent #1 at the start of each year in January. The patent # used in DATAMP represents the year of registration and the patent # (with "leading zeros" interposed to make the number total nine digits). This patent is #1,868 of the year 1904.
