| The patent describes pliers or pincers type tools formed of sheet metal stampings bent into shape to form crossing handles, with two rivets forming the pivot -- this allowing an "open throat." This patent goes further than the two U.S. patents noted below in that it explicitly claims the basic pliers formed of sheet metal stampings, and shows and describes additional examples of other pliers types. The patent also describes and claims parallel jaw pliers using this base (see also U.S. patent 427,220) and a punch added to the parallel jaw pliers (see also U.S. patent 427,497).
Bernard gives his occupation as "machinist."
