Detailed biography of "Vic" Vivian Henry West
Description:
An example has been reported, with markings "ANYCUT / Pat Nos. / British 29717/46 / India 35858 / France 523623 / U. S. A. 696,715 / Canada 547,936 / Australia 24079/45 / New Zealand". Those numbers are actually application numbers. Google Patents shows the number "AU2407945A" as the granted version of this patent but that number does not produce any results on Espacenet or the official IP Australia patent database. Google Patents also shows the number "AU128146B2", and searching the IP Australia database for that number shows that it is the "Serial Number" for this patent (AU1,945,024,079). See CA-468,989 for the Canada patent and FR-934,831 for the France patent.

The inventor was deceased at the time of issue and Clarice Constance West was his "legal representative" and in fact was his wife.

Vivian Henry "Vic" West fought in World War I as a private in Australia's 12th Horse Regiment. He was born 1889-04-19 in St. Peters, NSW, and died 1947-10-01 in Kogarah, NSW, occupation Clerk / Master Builder. He had been living on Gibbes St., Rockdale, NSW. Earlier in his life he had been a rugby player. A rugby history site says that West's birth name was Henry West but he used Vivian and Vic. He had a remarkably checkered and colorful stint in the army, with several arrests and incarcerations related to fighting and to going AWOL.

An article on this hacksaw frame appeared in a 1947 issue of Hardware & Machinery (vol. 62 p. 50) and is quoted below.

"A revolutionary type of all purpose hacksaw and wood working tool is embodied in the 'Anycut' hacksaw. Its diversity of cutting uses reaches a field beyond any existing standard type of manually operated hacksaw is the makers' claim. Through the action of the moving bar with its nose piece which houses the blade at its forward end, the blade, when in operation, remains rigid, unbreakable and perpendicular until it enters the material being cut, and any danger of the blades' distortion or cutting drift can be effectively controlled. This same moving bar assures trueness of cut by sighting, as with a pistol, using the top of the nose piece on the moving bar as a sighting point. An important feature of this tool is that there is no limit to the depth of cut at which metal or other materials may be parted. Also hacksaw blades with broken ends which are otherwise useless can be used in the 'ANYCUT' Hacksaw with results equally as effective as the undamaged article. The holding device will adjust itself to any required length of blade. This tool has many applications for which it is impossible to use a standard hacksaw, the makers say, and can take the place of a cutting torch or cold chisel in cases where bolts, screws, corrosion etc., are required to be parted, to free panel joints in difficult locations. The hacksaw is equally effective for cutting wood, masonite or plastics, and by grinding back the point of the blade it is ideal as a keyhole saw. Sole agents in all states for 'Anycut' hacksaws are George Wills & Co. Ltd."

Th firm of George Wills & Co. was in Adelaide, Australia, and information on them can be found in several lawsuits, though none of them relate to this hacksaw frame. That same volume of Hardware & Machinery carried ads for this saw: "Here it is! The 'Anycut' All Purpose Saw / THE TOOL ALL TRADESMEN AND HANDYMEN HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR Invaluable in all toolkits and workshops. Is readily and effectively worked where standard type hacksaw is useless . Supplies obtainable from all Hardware Wholesalers. BLADE WILL NOT DISTORT, BREAK OR WANDER DURING CUTTING OPERATION. WILL ( Take any Blade / Cut at any Angle / Cut to any Depth / Cut in any Space ) / Manufactured by VAUXHALL PRODUCTS, Rockdale, N.S.W. Sole Australian Agents: EMM Yannoulatos (Overseas) Pty. Ltd., 28 Martin Place, Sydney."
