Description:
This patent is one of four issued to Browning on this date—out of 128 in total that were issued to Browning in his lifetime—that provide the ideas used by almost every modern pistol. The invention relates to "automatic breech-loading firearms" that are operated by the recoil of the breech block or bolt carrier. A mechanism is provided for such a firearm that also prevents the hammer from being released until the breech is closed and all parts are in position to discharge the cartridge, and then held in the discharged position until the trigger is released. The mechanism uses a barrel that moves longitudinally and at the same time move slightly upward so as to lock breech, move with the breech block by the recoil, and eject the spent cartridge.
