| The specifications note and describe the function of the lever handle (Fig. 5) with head shaped as hammer head and claw, and features enabling wire bending and twisting action as shown in Figs. 6 & 7.
The claims relate to the alternate gripping and releasing action of the "grips" portion of the tool.
This tool is an improved form of wire-strainer first noted in an 1887 New Zealand patent application, and advertised in Australia, New Zealand, etc. well before this patent.
One known example of the "lever" portion shown as Fig.5 of the drawings is marked only DONALDS PATENT. Collectors advise the "hammer" was modified over decades of production, and several variants are known.
