Description:
This is perhaps the simplest butt gage ever patented. It is a simple piece of flat steel with sharp points at 3 corners, and adjustable fences referencing each point. While it was certainly compact, it would have been a real pain to use for scribing the lines, as the fences were tiny and there was nothing to prevent the tool from pivoting around them as it marked.
