Description: |
The drawing is titled "Plow Clevis."
The component parts include (1) a circular face plate for the plow beam with projections on the face, and means to firmly attach it to the beam, (2) a slotted guide piece with projections on the back side, (3) a bolt to clamp the guide piece to the face plate, and (4) a draft rod which attaches to the plow beam well back from the face.
This structure was described as the "dial clevis" or "draft rod" (noting J.M.C. Armsby's Dec. 1845 patent) and descriptions of its operation appear in catalogs and agricultural journals over a span of several years.
An 1849 OHIO CULTIVATOR "banner" includes a plow with the dial clevis and draft rod. An 1857 price list from Nourse, Mason & Co. (successor to Ruggles, Nourse and Mason) shows several models of Eagle Plows and other plows with the "draft rod" option. |
