Description: |
| This is the first British patent for a corkscrew. Henshall's claimed innovation was a button (a flat plate) between the shank and the worm so as to turn the cork when the worm bottomed out, thus breaking loose the cork from the bottle. Original Henshall corkscrews are marked, "OBSTANDO PROMOVES, SOHO PATENT", the latter part apparently referring to the fact that Matthew Boulton manufactured the crokscrews for Hensall at his Soho factory. The Henshall design has been extensively copied and most examples seen are those copies. |
