Description: |
| This is the initial patent for the Meehanite process of making cast iron. The patents covers the use of calcium silicide or magnesium silicide as an additive during the casting process to precipitate carbon out of the iron. "I claim. An alloy for use in the treatment of molten iron for making cast iron, comprising silicon in not less than approximately 50 percent, an alkaline earth metal in excess of 25 percent, a metal such as nickel from a substantial amount up to 5 percent, and a second alkaline metal of the calcium-magnesium group in a percentage somewhat less than one-half the percentage of the first alkaline metal." Three other alloy compositions are all given, all to achieve the same purpose. |
