Description:

Hook jaw pipe tongs with a "fixed" jaw having a sharpened tip and an inset four-sided grip. The griping tooth could be tapped out and rotated to expose a new sharp edge four times before needing to be sharpened or replaced.

Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" reprints an 1896 IRON AGE listing for the DARLING SAFETY PIPE TONGS. Other hardware trade journals of the time note production of eight sizes corresponding to 3/4" through 3 1/2" pipe.
