Description: |
| The adjusting "rosette" is shaped to transfer strain to the main shank of the wrench, in order to prevent failure of the ferrule. The drawings and specifications show three rings on the rosette and three grooves in the wrench shank.
The design was followed by a similar patent issued to Mr. Taft in February 1864 (Pat No. 41,747) showing two rings and two grooves.
The patent and subsequent reissue (RE3,483, assigned to Loring Coes) were the central focus in the law suit LORING COES vs. THE COLLINS CO. (January, 1882). The entire history of the patent application process is laid forth in the "Pleadings & Evidence" for that trial. The patents were used by Coes in the 1870s MECHANICS WRENCH. |
