Description: |
| This patent provides a detailed comparison of the brass-instrument valve designs at the time: the Stölzel valve which was a piston valve that created sharp angles in the air-path but was easy to build and reliable. Rotary valves provided superior sound quality due to a smoother air-path but were considerably more complex. Finally he saw in the Berlin valve (see Prussian patent DP-19 to Wieprecht and Moritz) a design that combined the best features of the Stölzel and rotary valves: simple construction but a smooth air-path that allowed a superior sound. Sax's 1843 patent (FR-15,364) used a version of the Berlin valve. This 1862 patent is not available online and although the linked paper reproduces at least some of the patent drawings, it is not known what improvements are covered by the patent. |
