Description:
The inventor is considered to be the father of nut and bolt manufacturing in America, beginning in 1818 as a sideline to his blacksmithing business in Marion, CT. In 1839 he partnered with Martin Barnes and built the first factory in the USA that was dedicated to the manufacture of nuts and bolts. This is the only patent Rugg obtained; his other machinery seems to have been treated as trade secrets and little is known about them. Relying on secrecy seems to have been the standard approach among nut and bolt makers, including Thomas Oliver, of Darlaston, Staffordshire, who was Rugg's equivalent in England.
