Description:
Abstract:

Valves controlled by pilot or relay valves.-An economizer valve for locomotives or steam traction engines comprises a piston or mitre valve operated by steam or other fluid pressure, acting on a piston mounted on the valve-rod. The valve pistons 6, 6a, Fig. 2, are mounted on a common rod 7, and reciprocate within a cylinder 3. The inlet and outlet ports 4. 5 are arranged diametrically opposite, but one above the other. The operating-piston 2 is mounted on an extension 7a of the valve-rod, and reciprocates within a larger cylinder 1 under the control of steam pressure admitted through the pipe 12, 13. In a modification, Fig. 3, the inlet port 4 is arranged above the outlet port 5, and the opening movement of the valve is effected by a spring 16 and the closing movement by steam pressure. In another modification, Fig. 4, the valve is a combination of a beveled disc 21 and piston 28 with a ball-and-socket joint 25. A valve for controlling the supply of steam to the operating- pistons of the economizer valve is shown in Fig. 5, Steam from the boiler is supplied through the pipe 11<a> and passes through the passage 12<a> in the plug to the pipe 12b, which communicates with the upper side of the larger piston. Steam is supplied in a similar manner to the underside of the piston by turning the valve plug through 90 . The pipe 13b communicates with the lower side of the piston and the pipe 14a with the exhaust. The valve shown in Fig. 3 is operated by a pilot valve of similar construction but having passages in one side only of the plug. The steam is exhausted by turning the plug to register with an exhaust passage, the steam passing from the. cylinder through a circumferential passage in the plug to the exhaust passage.

Claim:

In combination when used for a steam economizing valve, the following elements, to wit: A casing containing two 80 compartments of unequal diameters disposed in axial alinement, the upper compartment having two apertures located one above the other, said compartment containing a balanced piston-valve adapted to reciprocate gastight therein, and the lower compartment having ports and connections for the admission and escape respectively of an expansive medium above and below the as tight 90 piston located therein, said piston being connected to the piston-valve by means of a rod; the combined piston and piston valve being operated by the preponderance of pressure upon the larger piston and the piston-valve is adapted to close and open the communication between the ingress and egress sides of the upper compartment, the pressure upon the larger piston being Controlled, alternatively below and above the same, from any distance away from it by means of a rotary conical four-way cock, substantially as described herein and illustrated b} the accompanying drawings. A steam economizing apparatus as claimed in the preceding claiming clause in which the upward motion of the larger piston, to close the communication between the ingress and egress sides of the upper compartment, is obtained by means of live steam or fluid, and the downward motion of the said piston to re-establish the said communication is obtained by means of a spring in coin bination with the difference in pressure upon the larger piston, the velocity of the said piston being controlled by the gradual opening of the exhaust port in the rotary conical control cock.
