Stan Schulz I.X.L. SAFETY WRENCH - 1921 write-up (FLICKR)
|
Description: |
Ratchet designed for the purpose of opening and closing bottom doors on railroad hopper cars.
The ratchet pawl action is reversible by disconnecting the spring, swinging the pawl to the opposite position, and re-connecting the spring. The handle has an offset for clearance. Depending on manufacturer, the hopper bottom doors had one of two sizes of square ended pivot shaft, and the wrench design includes a "shim" to fit the opening to the smaller size.
Appears in trade literature as the I.X.L. SAFETY CAR WRENCH, distributed by Frick & Lindsay Co., Pittsburgh, PA., with directory entries suggesting Gealy was producing them.
Corresponding Canadian patent CA-188,660 was issued Feb. 11, 1919.
SWACO (pat. no 1,053,703) was a competitor. |
