Description: |
This patent covers the recipe for Red River Cereal, which is (or was) a Canadian Institution and was also sold for decades in the United States. The recipe was developed in 1924 by Gertrude Edna Skilling of Winnipeg. Her cereal was produced by the Red River Grain Co. until 1928 when manufacturing moved to Maple Leaf Milling Co.; our "inventor", Harvey Kavaner, was a "designer to Maple Leaf Milling Co. Limited". In 1995 the Red River brand was acquired by Robin Hood Multifoods, Inc., part of Smucker Foods of Canada Co. Smucker's stopped distributing the cereal through US retail channels, and then in 2020, Smucker's ceased production altogether. In 2022 Arva Flour Mills of Arva, Ontario, acquired the Red River Cereal brand, and reintroduced the product, primarily through their website (see link). The recipe given in the patent is wheat (85 per cent), rye (10 per cent) and flax (5 per cent). The whole-grain ingredients are combined and then "fed between grinding stones and the wheat and rye are crushed or cracked between the stones and the flax goes through whole and such latter is very desirable as otherwise the product would become an oily mixture." There is no patent drawing. |
