| This is an all-metal gage of quite unusual construction. The entire piece appears to be made of iron U- and L-channel, held together with machine screws.
A couple of aspects of this design are particularly noteworthy: first off, the head is in two pieces, driven apart by a springs and held together by a bolt. Loosening the bolt would allow the springs to force the two halves apart and allow moving the bar.
Another fascinating design idea is that the fence face is a separate piece, designed to be replaceable. The drawing shows a flat and curved fence.
This piece was produced commercially, but unfortunately without all of the features in the patent drawings. The split head is still there, but the replaceable fence and extra marking points are not. |
