Description:
The primary innovation is to simultaneously move both the knife and the log in such a way as to produce a slicing motion of the knife. Scientific American said of this invention at the time, "If we mistake not, this is the most valuable improvement ever made in veneer cutting machinery. Patents are in progress through our agency in Great Britain, France, Spain, &c."

The 1868-02-01 issue of Scientific American carried a notice that Hart had applied for a seven-ear extension to this patent. According to the 1873 "Subject-matter index of patents for inventions issued by the United States Patent Office", this patent was granted an extension.

Hart had earlier received patent 6,269 for a cast-iron car wheel, 1849-04-31.
