| This patent covers the adaptation of Barrett's jack design for use with oil-well wrenches. See also patent 422,879, granted to one William Forgie. Forgie had approached Barrett with the basic idea of adapting one of Barrett's jacks to this purpose, but he apparently did not have any mechanical ability himself. Barrett designed something, one of Duff Mfg. Co.'s patternmakers made the required patterns, and Barrett produced the jacks for sale by Forgie, who found the jacks were quite successful. The jacks had "Barrett Patent" on them, which Forgie ground off and substituted his own name. Barrett protested when he found out and demanded that Forgie cease doing that, which he did. But then Forgie applied for, and obtained, a patent for Barrett's invention, and then sued Barrett for infringing his patent: Forgie v. Oil-Well Supply Co., Ltd. Forgie emphatically lost that lawsuit, Barrett subsequently applied for a patent, and this patent is the result. |
