Joel Havens Vintage Machinery entry for F. E. Beardsley
|
Description: |
This axle cutter bears a strong resemblance to that patented by Frank E. Beardsley of Traverse City, Michigan; Byers' improvements are aimed at providing better clamping and centering on tapered axles. One example of an axle cutter has been seen with text cast into it: "F E BEARDSLEY TRAVERSE MICH BYERS SPECIAL J L BYERS AGENT NO.2" The photos that we saw are incomplete and it is possible that there was additional text in front of "J L Byers". We have also seen an example of a much simpler axle threading tool, labeled "SPECIAL AXLE & THREAD CUTTER / MADE EXPRESSLY FOR / O. J. L. BYERS Santa Rosa, Calif." This threading tool appears to be of later design, perhaps from the 1920s or '30s. |
