Vintage Machinery entry for Cummings Machine Works
Description:
The inventor would be granted over 120 patents during his lifetime. He established a machine shop in 1881, which in 1905 would incorporate as the Cummings Machine Works "to operate a foundry and machine shop. Henry H. Cummings is president and treasurer and the capital stock is $25,000." (From April 1905 The Foundry, page 101.)

The invention is a drill press that automatically adjusts its speed to the diameter of the drill or cutter. The power downfeed speed is continuously variable under control of the operator. The speed-change mechanism is adapted from the inventor's own patent 529,713.
