Wikipedia biography of James B. Francis
Description:
This invention is a liquid-mercury bearing for the vertical water-wheel shaft. The inventor is best remembered as the inventor of the very important Francis turbine water-wheel, which to this day is the dominant type of water-wheel. Francis did not patent his water wheel, which was developed using experiments and rigorous mathematical analysis.
