Description:
This is the first patent for a steel pen. The nib was fabricated from two pieces of steel soldered together along part of their length; later, the nib was pressed out of a single piece of steel. Donkin manufactured his pen for a while, then in 1811 sold that business to Joseph Bramah for £350. By 1860 there were reportedly 1000 pen manufacturers in Birmingham alone.
