Description: |
| The patented feature is the use of two screws -- one to clamp the jaws and the second to tighten the pressure. The arrangement also allows adjustment of the jaw angles.
The specifications note potential uses "holding articles fast while being operated upon, and for holding nuts or screws while they are being driven or drawn, and for holding bits, drills, or other tools while being operated upon."
The patent disclaims any features covered by Goodrich's Dec. 10, 1878 patent no. 210,684 -- compare fig 5. The idea is further refined in Goodrich's Nov. 25, 1884 patent ( no. 308,356).
The adjustable jaws of the "Compound Power" brace wrench advertised by Cook and McLane in 1883 are manifestations of this design. They most closely match patent no. 308,356. |
