Description:
According to the 1873 "Subject-matter index of patents for inventions issued by the United States Patent Office", this patent was granted an extension. Augur was a self-taught sculptor of considerable ability. This particular machine was intended for carving piano legs, although he later switched to work with marble. One report indicates that the carving machine is "is currently on display in the New Haven Historical Society building on Whitney Avenue in Hamden".
