Patent description
Description:
This is the very first Canadian patent. It is in the "1st series" of patents, numbered 1 to 3,325, issued for 14 year terms, with this first patent being issued in June 1824 and the last issued in 1869; we have entered these early patents into datamp with an "XC" prefix. The "2nd series" of patents were issued beginning in August 1869 when Canada's new Legislature—created by the 1867 Confederation of Canada—passed legislation setting down a framework for issuing patents and moving the patent offices from Toronto (Upper Canada / Canada West / Ontario) and Montreal (Lower Canada / Canada East / Quebec) to Canada's new capital city of Ottawa on the Ontario-Quebec border. These new patents were, at first, issued for 5-year terms and were only granted to Canadian citizens. In September 1872 the patent legislation was updated. A patent's term could now be 5, 10 or 15 years with payment of $20, $40, or $60, respectively; the 5- and 10-year patents could be extended to 15 years with an additional payment. Foreigners could now obtain patents, and inventions already granted US patents could be patented in Canada provided not more than one year had elapsed.
