Description: |
| The wrench consists of three parts; the movable jaw, the adjusting nut, and the main stock. The shank of the movable jaw fits in an angled slot through the main stock, with the adjusting nut in an intersecting slot. The main slot is set at roughly 60 degrees, and is larger at both ends than in the center, allowing for rocking motion of the adjustable jaw.
An early "loop handle" 6 inch example is marked with the patent date.
An 1893 listing gives Franklin as the maker, and an 1892 catalog lists 8 sizes from 6 through 48 inches.
Some examples incorporate John Eaton's June 22, 1897 improvements (pat. no. 584,814).
A 1905 ad for the FRANKLIN PIPE WRENCH manufactured? or distributed? by OIL WELL SUPPLY CO. of Pittsburgh shows a replaceable insert in the movable jaw. |
