Description:
The patent describes a pipe wrench with teeth on the inner face of the movable jaw which would engage a rack on the main shank, and a cam lever on the back side of the movable jaw which would lock the teeth and rack together to hold the size adjustment. One side of the movable jaw is open to show a size scale stamped in the side of the main shank.

New product announcements in 1901 and 1902 show the wrench with finger grips on the side of the cam lever.

This wrench effectively superseded the earlier Richard F. Downey patent "alligator" pipe wrench (no. 659,293) manufactured by Dudly.
