Description:
Most of the patents prior to 1836 were lost in the Dec. 1836 fire. Only about 2,000 of the almost 10,000 documents were recovered. Little is known about this patent, however several surviving examples of the bellows exist, made of wood, leather and brass with either hand painted or stencilled decorations. These examples are small and fairly ornate bellows for household use. The examples we have seen have a maker's label that reads, "Eckstein and Richardson / Patent / No. 36, / North Third / Street, / Philadelphia"; later examples omitted with word "Patent" and presumably post-date patent expiration in 1834. The partnership consisted of John Eckstein and Ross B. Richardson. An advertisement from about 1820 for the Philadelphia Bellows Manufactory, Eckstein & Richardson, describes their common bellows, chamber bellows, and "Elegant Convex Japanned Parlour Bellows; (For which they have obtained Letters Patent.)"
