| The patented feature is the connection between the push-piece and the movable jaws. Birch had a series of patents for tools of this type, which were produced as small self-adjusting socket wrenches and as watch keys.
Parallel patent no. 282,606 is a simplified version designated as a watch key. British patent GB-188303841 registered Aug. 7, 1883 appears to correspond to the two patents rolled into one.
Some watch keys based on this patent are marked "BIRCHES PATENT."
A January 2009 eBay listing by Ned Finkel provided the following description, "Pocket watch key marked "JOHN S. BIRCH & CO.". This is an example of the important invention by John Birch of an adjustable pocket watch key that would work with many different types of pocket watches. It has a spring loaded design and when the button is pushed it opens the jaws in the front to grasp the winding mechanism on a watch. It weighs 7 grams and measures 1 11/16" long x 1/4" in diameter. The barrel has a gilt finish and the jaws are made of steel. It has a central loop that attaches to a chain so it can be worn on a watch chain." |
