The jaws are operated by a pair of left - and right-hand screws.
Goodrich incorporated some aspects of this in his May 18, 1880 patent (no. 227,686 -- see fig. 5 of that patent), and revisited and elaborated on the idea with patent no. 308,356 issued November 25, 1884.
Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1839-1930" notes an 1883 MECHANICS listing showing COOK & McLANE of New York producing this as an adjustable brace wrench -- the jaws of that wrench most closely correspond to the Nov. 25, 1884 patent noted above. |
