Description: |
| The patent presents two alternate head structures; one where the overall angle of the head is adjustable in relation to the handle, and the other with the head fixed to the handle. Both structures have a fixed jaw with one sloping & toothed face for use as a pipe wrench and a flat face at right angle to the movable jaw for nut wrench purposes. Both structures have a movable jaw which can be set to bear either against flat nut wrench face or sloping pipe wrench face. Only the "fixed head" variant shown in figs. 1 & 2 was produced.
Carll wrenches are found with a variety of markings suggesting a succession of production companies. Initially produced in 6" and 10" sizes.
A 1920 write-up for the wrench gives Practical Tools Co. as the manufacturer with M. W. Robinson Co. as sales agent -- both firms having the same address - 296 Broadway, New York City. That write-up notes the maximum "safe" jaw openings for 6", 8" and 10" wrenches.
A similar reversible jaw appears in the January 19, 1897 Canfield patent (no. 575,592). |
