Description: |
The specifications describe the wrench as self-adjusting, having ratchet action, and fitting a range of sizes of hex or square nuts. Although the wrenches bear Matthews' name, the actual manufacture is likely to have been contracted out. Several sizes are known; the larger sizes are differently proportioned. An 18 inch example has a round end suggesting a pipe could be slipped on for extra leverage.
Matthews' June 27, 1944 design patent (D138,173) is closely related, and was produced as the AUTO GRIP by the Cleveland Wrench Company. |
