Description: |
In 1880 the inventor was manager of the Edgefield Box Factory in Nashville; the following year the business had been renamed to the Cumberland Box Factory, and an ad says, "J. W. Cole, Manager, Manufacturer of Packing Boxes of all Kinds. Cole's Box Strawberry Stands and Fruit Boxes a Specialty."The 1886 catalog of machinery retailer Curtis & Co. features "Cole's Patent Cut-Off Saw Table". The patent date is given but the manufacturer is not. A search for Cole's Patent Cut-Off Saw Table, and variants thereof, turned up a couple of mentions of one N. S. Jonte who displayed it at the 1897 Tennessee Centennial Exposition. A search on Jonte provided evidence that Nathan S. Jonte of Nashville was a plumber which does not suggest that he had the skills to manufacture the saw. |
