Joel Havens Biography of Birdsill Holly Pictures of Holly Fire Hydrants "Vintage Machinery" entry for Holly Mfg. Co.
|
Description: |
This was patented by Birdsill Holly after he moved from Seneca Falls, NY to Lockport, NY. In Lockport, he founded the Holly Mfg. Co. to manufacture his inventions. Although known for his tool patents, Birdsill Holly's main line of inventions were in the steam heat and drinking water distribution fields.
This patent is for a frost-proof fire hydrant, which puts the valve below the frost line. In addition, an opening in the vertical barrel around the valve-stem is exposed once the valve is closed, which allows the water in the barrel to drain out into the ground.
There is an example of this hydrant at the Niagara County Historical Society in Lockport, NY. |
