Birdsill Holly was a principal in the firm of Silsby, Race & Holly of Seneca Falls, NY. This pump was probably used in early fire engines that they manufactured. Although known for his tool patents, Birdsill Holly's main line of inventions were in the steam heat and drinking water distribution fields. This patent is for a Rotary Steam Engine & Water Pump.
Abstract:
This invention consists in 'leading the eduction pipe of a steam engine directly into the suction pipe of a common force or lift pump, whereby condensation is effected, and a partial vacuum produced without the cumbersome and expensive apparatus common to condensing engines.
Claim:
Leading the eduction steam pipe of a steam engine into the suction pipe of a force or lift pump substantially as herein described whereby the condensation of the steam is effected and a partial vacuum produced without a separate condenser and air pump, and this in engines employed wholly or in part to raise water, without any additional expenditure or loss of power to raise the water to effect condensation.
