Description: |
Part of this patent is the reversible jaw faces. Ken Cope's "American Wrench Makers 1830-1930" cites an 1892 "Iron Age" listing showing this patent incorporated in the CHAMPION chain pipe wrench produced by the Ithaca Drop Forge Company of Ithaca, NY. The wrench also incorporated features of Bufford's July 15, 1890 and Dec. 9, 1890 patents (432,195 and 442,569).
These patents were the subject of a series of lawsuits after these Bufford chain wrench patents were assigned to the J.H. Williams Co. of Brooklyn, NY. The initial agreements between the principals of Ithaca Drop Forge, Bufford and Kitson were verbal. The later lawsuits were to settle claims that Ithaca Drop Forge had acquired partnership interest in the patents.
